                Many of you have asked why the NHHA Alerts stopped in mid-August. Our ISP changed something - we don't know what - and as a result we've been unable to communicate with you since August 18th. Despite submitting multiple trouble tickets, we're still no closer to a resolution.

                Until the problem is solved, we'll post items on our website's home page.

            <title>Fire advisory</title>
            <author>President, Northwood Hills HOA</author>
            <subject>Advisory</subject>
            <description>
                <pre>
                    By now, you've all heard of the terrible damage that's been done by the
                    wildfires here and in Oklahoma. You've probably also heard that 2005 is
                    shaping up to be the 5th driest year on record. Although the Red Flag Warning
                    appears to have ended, it's still a good idea to be watchful for fire danger.
                    I've asked our NHHA Security patrol to watch for most anything that could start
                    a fire, and YOUR help will also be appreciated. Things to watch for:
                    - outdoor smoking (contractors, etc.)
                    - welding/soldering
                    - electric powerlines rubbing against vegetation
                    - fireworks (illegal in Dallas, anyway)
                    - barbecue grills
                    - dry Christmas trees

                    If you see a fire, call 9-1-1 immediately. The nearest fire station is
                    practically in our backyard: DFD Station 56 is on Beltline Road, east of the
                    Fretz Park Library. That said, if they are away on a run, another station
                    may be dispatched so it's best to call 9-1-1 -- not the station directly.
                    Also, since it's only 2 days until New Year's Eve, may I remind you that
                    discharging weapons (firing guns) into the air is not only illegal, but
                    potentially deadly (those bullets have to land somewhere).

            <author>President, Northwood Hills HOA</author>
            <subject>Advisory</subject>
            <description>
                I hope everyone's enjoying the mild July weather! :-) As of
                this evening, I have a list of 15 homeowners who are listed as Block Captains;
                our patrol wanted the list for Northwood Hills' first year participating in
                National Night Out (Tuesday, August 2nd). Some of you have asked what
                National Night Out's all about. Briefly, it's an organized way to have a
                reason to meet and get acquainted with your neighbors. Many of us lead
                hectic lives, yet don't even know the names of the people 2 houses away.
                Getting to know our neighbors can also help decrease neighborhood crime,
                because we'll know who belongs and who doesn't.

                Example: if you know someone's on vacation, yet a strange car's in their
                driveway, it could be cause to investigate. How to "celebrate" National
                Night Out? Just dig out some glasses of lemonade (or the refreshment of your
                choice!) and sit around the pool, getting to know your neighbors. Heck, dig
                out that ice cream freezer and whip up a batch of homemade ice cream!
                If you'd like our NHHA Patrol (or even the Dallas Police) to drop by, please
                let me know ASAP .. the deadline for asking is 7/25 (Monday). First come,
                first served ... You can also nose around the NNO website [www.nno.org]
                which has photos, suggestions, and more. Let's keep it safe out there!

            <author>Cliff Brooks</author>

            <description>
                According to the Dallas County Elections website, about 28% of us
                voted in the recent election. The two big items were Proposition 1 (a/k/a the
                Blackwood Charter Amendment) and the race for City Council District 11. For
                districts 1812 and 1817:
                Proposition 1      747 for, 356 opposed (68% for)
                City Council 11    422 Harrison, 546 Koop

                Citywide, Proposition 1 failed, and Linda Koop won the District 11 race.

                You are invited to the first public hearing to democratically
                revise the city charter on Tuesday, February 22, 4:30 p.m. in the council
                chambers at Dallas City Hall. This will be the first of a series of public
                forums to put the charter review commission's recommendations back on the
                table. Our goal is to develop and present the citizens of Dallas the
                opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns about the future government
                system of Dallas. This election would take place in November as a alternative
                proposal to Beth Ann Blackwood's petition in May.

                in/around Elmridge only and isn't a project of the Northwood Hills Homeowners
                Association, Inc.. We do make an annual contribution toward upkeep of that

            <title>Magazine, book, soccer scammers</title>
            <author>Gene Saunders</author>
            <subject>Advisory</subject>
            <description>
                A single report by one of our NHHA members has probably saved
                others a lot of grief. Numerous older teenagers (17,18, etc.) have been going
                door-to-door with a high-pressure pitch to buy various things - books,
                magazines, even soccer trips. These kids are being exploited by a company
                called UPSI (which has numerous aliases) and are being driven from city to city.
                The scam is well documented on the Internet, and basically involves the kids
                saying they live in the neighborhood and are earnings points for a Soccer Trip,
                or something similar. They then try to sell you an overpriced magazine
                subscription, but odds are you'll soon forget about your &quot;donation&quot;
                and the cash went to these kids' route boss instead. Hey, it could be
                legitimate, but based on the stuff on the web, I wouldn't take the risk.
                You're doing these kids a favor by saying &quot;no thanks&quot; and closing
                the door, then calling 911 with a description and their direction of travel.
                NHHA members should follow up with a call to our NHHA Patrol.

                Northwood Hills is located on the NE corner of Hillcrest and McCallum (a few

            <title>West Nile Virus update</title>
            <author>Gene Saunders</author>
            <subject>Advisory</subject>
            <description>
                One of our Northwood Hills neighbors found a dead blue jay in her
                yard, and called 311. But, no one from the City came to pick it up. Lesson
                learned? The bird must have been dead NO MORE THAN 12 HOURS. We also learned
                that the City has tested 70 birds this year, and eight were positive for West
                Nile Virus. The best thing you can do is to remove all standing water from
                your property (even areas as small as a teaspoon). And don't forget to check
                rain gutters, too .. this can be an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
