Found a pet -- lost a pet?

Hopefully, you'll never lose your pet. But, if you do, we're hoping to explain what to expect to make retrieval easier.

Most of the time, your neighbors will call the phone number on the pet's tag, but occasionally you may have to resort to posting signs on the telephone polls.

If you have FOUND A PET, play it safe and take it to a nearby veterinarian for a checkup, to make sure it's healthy, especially if it seems lethargic.

NHHA Members (only) should also call the NHHA Security patrol, who often assist in reuniting lost animals with their owners.

Was your dog wearing a collar? If yes, color/description? Any tags? Are there any distinguishing features on its body (such as: a pink tipped nose, coat color, any unusual markings, etc.)? Have you checked with Dallas Animal Control? They pick up strays and/or if an animal is reported hit on the road. When was the dog last seen? What have the owners done to advertise the disappearance?

It is much easier to retrieve your pet if it is wearing a collar with current tags (City of Dallas, rabies tags, name tags) or (even better) a microchip (about the size of a grain of rice, implanted under the skin).

You can even search PetData's web site if your know your pet's tag number.

Several vendors will sell you collars with your phone number stitched into the collar. We've even spotted self-service "pet tag vending machines" in Petco, Petsmart and Wal-Mart where you can have a tag engraved in a few minutes. If your pet refuses to wear a collar, consider one of the sub-dermal implants available at many veterinarians.

One Stop Shopping: Find-A-Pet

Find-A-Pet: 214-827-4357 Find a Pet

The open-24-hours, free, "Find-A-Pet" service in Dallas helps reunite lost pets and their owners. Ideally, your lost pet should be wearing its registration tags - but Find-A-Pet will accept information even if that's not the case.

If you find a stray dog or cat, call Find-a-Pet and give them the pet’s tag number(s). That information is entered into a computer and matched with the owner’s name and address.

If you have lost your pet, call Find-a-Pet and they will check all shelters maintained by the City and/or the SPCA of Texas. If they find your pet, you'll be told which shelter has your pet. In other words, one call does it all. Please take time now and check to be sure your pet’s registration tag is on its collar. Then record the tag number for your records.

The information they'll want is:

  • Your name
  • At least 2 phone numbers where you can be reached
  • Pet's detailed description: breed, age, sex, markings
  • Nearest intersection where the pet was lost
  • Tag numbers (if any)

City of Dallas - Animal Services

Dallas Animal Services
1818 N. Westmoreland
impound info:

adoption info:

214-671-0249

The vast majority of the animals picked up by the City of Dallas - Animal Services are dogs. They're usually picked up after someone calls 311 to report a stray. There are few cats.

If your pet is captured inside Dallas city limits, it will be taken to one of two "central" locations, depending on where it was picked up.

You can call Dallas Animal Services to hear a list of animals impounded that day (not prior days); it's best to call after 5:30pm. If you think your pet matches a description of one on this Dallas Lost Pet Hotline, you must act fast; the city only holds them for 72 hours, after which they are subject to euthanasia (only a few are ever adopted). Animals are listed by approximate location of pickup, color, breed and size. Animal Control is open 8a-5p Monday through Saturday. Be sure to bring proof of City registration and rabies vaccination, or risk a fine.

Location

Dallas Animal Services is located at 1818 North Westmoreland (Mapsco 43-T) .. at the NE corner of I-30 and Westmoreland (4 miles west of I-35E) - about 16 miles from Northwood Hills.

History: the 8414 Forney Road location closed on 30 November 2007 and the Oak Cliff Shelter closed before that.

Consider pet adoption

There is some information about feral cats on our FAQ page (Q43).

No need to belabor this point: there are a lot of great animals available at these shelters, all for the price of a small "adoption fee". PetSmart sponsors the Luv A Pet Adoption Center every weekend at both 12100 Inwood Road and 16821 Coit Road (north of Campbell). Also, the North Shore Animal League (based in Port Washington, New York) sponsors an annual Pet Adoptathon in early May.

Spay / neuter

There are many reasons why you may choose to spay or neuter your pet. The City of Dallas registration is cheaper. The re-adoption fee to recover a lost pet is cheaper. And you're helping to curtail the animal population explosion.

Animal carcasses

If you spot a dead animal (including bats and squirrels) in the road, call 311 and arrange for the City of Dallas to pick it up. Rabies is contagious and it's best not to touch the animal yourself.

The City maintains a record of pickups (sorted by Mapsco coordinate), so if you're calling to inquire about a pet it's best to know the nearest intersection.

Responsible neighbors

When you gotta go, you gotta go. That applies for dogs, too. Recently, we have seen more and more dog owners carrying a plastic grocery bag while walking their pet. THANKS FOLKS, FOR BEING A RESPONSIBLE NEIGHBOR!
