Assistance Agencies
Please be careful when wanting to assist someone who claims to be needing help! There are organizations which can run a background check, and help those who truly need it. Please contact a reputable agency if you would like to truly help someone! Here are a few numbers that the Dallas Police Department uses:
Additionally, one of our NHHA Members recommended Network of Community Ministries (2 miles east of us) at 972-234-8880 and another recommended the Neighborhood Service Council at 972-239-3501.
Please share this information with family and friends who don't receive these emails! We don't want people being taken advantage of because of their kind hearts and generosity!

General Consumer Complaints
Contractors
How to find a reputable contractor
What this does provide are places to look on the Internet, where you can become a more savvy buyer of home contractor services. Caveat emptor! (May the buyer beware)
The Northwood Hills Homeowners Association, Inc. is not endorsing any of these; the listing is here only as a reference for you, the homeowner.
Identity Theft
Here are some precautions you should take to protect yourself against credit fraud.
Prevention
Place your credit cards, drivers license, and social security card on a photocopy machine and copy both sides so that you will know who to call when any of the items are stolen or lost. The key is to have all of your account numbers and the associated toll free numbers to call when you have a problem. If you are the victim of a theft, call the Dallas Police Department and report it. Calling the Police and making a report will prove to credit providers that you were diligent.
Action
The most important thing you can do as a victim of credit or identity theft is call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and social security. The alert will require any company that checks your credit with the intent to borrow to get your approval first. You can contact the credit reporting agencies at the following numbers:
- Equifax
-
800-525-6285
- Experian (was TRW)
-
888-397-3742
- Trans Union
-
800-680-7289
- Social Security
-
800-269-0271

Pet Sitter
Where to find a reputable pet sitter
- 1. recommendation from one of your neighbors!

- 2. National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS)
-
petsitters.org
- 3. Petsitters.com
-
petsitters.com
- 4. Pet Sitters International

- 5. Pet Sitter Web
-
petsitterweb.com
Also, we spotted advice from HSUS on locating a good pet sitter, and another page with advice from catsinternational.com (or search Google).
As the pet owner, it's your responsibility to tell them everything they'll need to know about your pet. This includes medical history, eating habits and personality. Be sure to leave the number where you can be reached as well as an alternative contact. Your sitter will require the phone number of your veterinarian and may ask for written authorization to take your pet to the hospital if necessary. If your pet is insured, be sure to leave your policy information and company telephone number.
Termites
A homeowner can probably benefit most from a termite inspection in March or after the swarm season (April and May). If termites are swarming, a homeowner will see them. Any other time, a professional inspector has a far greater chance of detecting activity that an untrained eye might miss.
The Texas Structural Pest Control Board has a good termite FAQ on their web site's Termite Information Page.
In addition, there's Termite Tidbits which includes some termite photos.
